Aim

Maintenance of landscape diversity and plant and animal species dependent on the agricultural lands

Tasks

  1. To evaluate the status of ecosystems dependent on agricultural activities in eastern Ladoga region as well as effects of agriculture on biota dynamics

  2. To analyse ongoing and planned changes in agriculture, market opportunities and local interest in maintenance of traditional agriculture in the area

  3. To develop and test a strategy for supporting traditional agriculture

Activities

  1. Investigation of the current situation and analysis of long-term data on biota and soils of the region

  2. Analysis of data on landowners, their agricultural practices and changes going on in the agriculture of the region

  3. Identification of the areas essential for maintenance of biodiversity, together with local stakeholders; development and implementation of microprojects aiming at the conservation of these areas

  4. Elaboration of the strategy for preservation of valuable agricultural lands in eastern Ladoga region

Time-frame

Duration of the project - 24 months

Budget

76 000 EURO

Notes

The pilot project is to be started in the Olonets district together with WWF Sweden.

1.4. - "Minimisation of anthropogenic pollution of the Lake Ladoga region"

Aim

To identify and assess the long-term global environmental changes in the Ladoga region caused by the pressure of anthropogenic factors

Tasks

  1. Qualitative and quantitative analysis of Ladoga region pollutants in soils and bottom sediments

  2. Zoning of the territory and analysis of pollution dynamics

  3. Lobbying for resolutions to be adopted by regional and local authorities aiming at reduction or prevention of pollution

  4. Elaboration of the monitoring system for soils and bottom sediments and recommendations for practical use of the obtained data

Activities

  1. To carry out in situ investigations in the Ladoga region and evaluate the level of pollution, quantity and quality of pollutants and the ways of their accumulation in sediments and soils

  2. Analysis of available and newly obtained data on sediments and soils (using GIS technology)

  3. Elaboration of the monitoring system for soils and bottom sediments and recommendations for practical use of the obtained data; presentation of the results and recommendations to the responsible authorities

  4. Preparation of a system for comparing the results with the data available on other large lakes ( by processing all data sets with GIS)

Time-frame

Duration of the project - 18 months

Budget

34 000 EURO

1.5. - "Shipping and the Ladoga environment"

Aim

Environmentally-friendly development of shipping on Lake Ladoga

Tasks

  1. To analyse current pressures from transport on the Lake Ladoga ecosystems

  2. To develop recommendations for minimising the negative effect of shipping on the natural complexes

Activities

  1. Evaluation of the intensity of passenger and cargo traffic on Lake Ladoga

  2. Analysis of the harmfulness of the shipping routes

  3. Assessment of the quantity and composition of pollution from water transport along different routes

  4. Elaboration of recommendations to optimise the routes in order to protect unique or otherwise valuable ecosystems of the Ladoga region

Time-frame

Duration of the project - 12 months
